Just google "high school learning commons" and you will see that this is an evolution that is happening all over the country. I have heard great things about the learning commons created at one of my clients' child's school in Chelmsford, MA, and I've been following a blog from the John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver as they work on their plans. Ever since I heard about the idea, I've been interested...<br /><br />A learning commons provides welcoming, comfortable and flexible spaces where students and teachers can study, do research or work in groups from pairs to small groups to whole classes, using various technologies including laptops, notebooks, smartphones, ipods, etc., (and books, too!) to access information in a networked, global learning environment. It encourages participatory learning, with librarians serving more as "learning coaches" supporting digital literacy, and where "technology is a tool and not the driver."<br /><br />It's a very exciting idea and I'd say our RHS library is overdue for a makeover. I expect we'll hear more from Mr. Lorenz on this next year.Laurienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-768945813587888212.post-35086406373282338642011-05-18T00:22:46.966-04:002011-05-18T00:22:46.966-04:00A "learning commons"?
