At tonight's HSA meeting at the high school, the two student reps gave a little presentation on student attitudes toward RHS. One of the questions they had been asked by the HSA was: in a perfect world, what things do you wish you had at RHS? The list was compiled at their Student Congress meeting.. Here's what they wished for (remember, this is in a "perfect" world):
-- More use of Blackboard by teachers
-- Laptops in the Campus Center for group project work
-- Better recycling practices on campus
-- More use of recycled paper
-- Ability to access their "u-drive" (student computer files) from home, for easier transfer of work between home and school
-- More time between classes
-- More student parking
-- A golf course
-- Student lounge, possibly in the balcony of the campus center
-- Bus from student parking at Vets field
-- Solar panels to generate electricity at the HS
-- Better lockers
-- ID Cards that function like debit cards, so they can swipe to pay for food in cafeteria, student store
-- Email for students, for sending announcements, assignments, etc.
The students listed the following STRENGTHS of RHS:
-- Student-faculty relationships
-- Freedom (open campus, etc.)
-- Easy access to teachers for extra help
They listed the following WEAKNESSES of RHS:
-- Facilities are a little run-down (looks nice from outside)
-- No parking for students
-- Crowded classes (in lower grades)
The two student reps did a great job talking about these things and I thought the lists were quite interesting. It's great to hear directly from the students how they feel, rather than only relying on what the "grown-ups" say the students think.

Of these items, many of them important, I'll pick one that I'd like to see changed. The increased use of Blackboard by teachers should be an enforced priority by the administration. I've written before that only two of eight of my daughter's teachers utilize Blackboard. At your suggestion, I contacted the principal. Nothing happened. How do ideas go from thought to action at RHS?

Just curious..what's the average class size for freshman/sophmores?
To 6:32 PM, in general, your first and best route to getting an idea implemented at any school is through the principal. If you don't get the action that you're looking for, you should contact Dr. Fishbein at the Ed Center, dfishbein@ridgewood.k12.nj.us.
Specific to Blackboard and the web, the district is currently doing a review of all elements of our web presence, from district/school website through student/teacher learning tools including Blackboard. There is a committee consisting of administrators, staff, teachers and parents who are investigating and will be making recommendations. One of our goals is to make our website the most useful it can be for everyone. I believe that the easier it is to use, the more everyone -- parents, students, teachers -- will use it. We'll keep you posted.
